It's been a while since I've written about a event.. It's been a while since I've been to a event I could write about :)
Winter WarKingdom 12th night was nice but was so cramped I had trouble getting quality time with every other sentence having to move out of someone's way. Winter War was very different.
The day started off rather early for me, up at 7am! Grom and Anika from Eoforwic live very close to me and we've been hanging out a bit lately, so we drove down together. Good times!
I was able to hang out with old and new friends alike. I heard from Tangwystl on my SCA photo archiving project, she brought me an album to scan.. some great stuff in there I am looking forward to sharing soon! As always, if you have some photos you'd like to share please contact me!
I was able to catch up with many friends I wasn't able to talk to, or who weren't at 12th Night. Gunthar and I were also able to talk to
Canker Canison (Colyne Stewart) about getting online to play some Left 4 Dead.. bhwhwaha!
T'Sivia's Pelican ceremony was great. I feel that the SCA has lost some of it's pomp and ceremony and it was fantastic to see her "kickin' it old school" as it were. Lots of good photos that I will be posting to my galleries at Tworavens.org.
Fortune stuck when we ran into Finnvarr,
forest_lady,
helfey and
nfdaughter at East Side Marios.
nfdaughter had mentioned gathering people at East Side's earlier in the week, but I had forgotten about it, though I did try to find folks before they left site to see where people were gathering for dinner. Grom and Anika are fans of ESM as am I, and when they walked in we moved tables and hung out.
The drive home was long, raining along the way. Some of the streets in St. Thomas were flooded! It's about an extra 50 minutes to St. Thomas over Woodstock where Winter War has previously been held. Still, I arrived home at approximately midnight, watched the episode of BSG and slept a good long sleep.
WatchmenI had been out the previous night at the AMC Whitby complex with Steve, Melissa & Siegfried to see The Watchmen.
I really enjoyed reading The Watchmen, when folks say it is the definitive Graphic Novel, they are not stretching the truth. The film translation made many fans of the novel apprehensive, we've seen so many far less complex series trashed when they get to the big screen, but kudos to Zach Snyder to keeping Watchmen intact & fantastic. Now, I will not go as far to say that Watchmen is for everyone. I will say, if you liked The Dark Knight, you will really enjoy this. I am a HUGE Batman fan, being my favourite superhero. In fact, the current series of films with Christian Bale is one of my favourite iterations of the franchise.. Watchmen was a better film than The Dark Knight. The cast was fantastic, including so many familiar faces in extended cast. Many of them great character actors. The main cast did not include any A-list Hollywood actors, which is very refreshing!
The big issue of the film: The altered film ending. I knew it was coming, and I reserved judgement until I'd seen it myself. Without telling you what either ending is, Siegfried and I (who is also a Watchmen fan) both strongly felt that the film ending is a more intelligent ending to the story. It played more with the strengths of the characters involved, was still profound, and eliminated the sense of Deux Ex Machina in the original novel.. 5 stars! I think I will be going back out to watch again later this week.
